SONORA STREAKS PAST FURY LATE

by Bill Norris

The Ontario Fury, driven by Mark Christopher Chevrolet, rallied to tie the game twice, but could not slow down the high-powered Soles de Sonora offense late in the game, as Sonora clinched the Southwest Division title with an 8-3 win Thursday night at Citizens Business Bank Arena.

Israel Sesay tied the game at 3 just 3:09 into the third quarter. But Sonora scored twice in the period, then three more times in the fourth – twice with goaltender Joey Kapinos pulled for the sixth attacker – to close out the game.

Uzi Tayou, the brother of the league’s leading scorer Franck Tayou, had two goals to lead the way for the Soles. Roberto Escalante and Raymundo Contreras each had a goal and assist for the Soles. Sonora goaltender Diego Reynoso made nine saves, including several down the stretch as the Fury tried to rally. He added to the final score, by scoring into the Fury’s vacated net, becoming the third goaltender to score a goal this season in the MASL.

Leonardo de Oliveira led the Fury with a goal and assist. Joey Kapinos made 12 saves in goal for Ontario.
