Ron Newman Cup Finals - Game One
Playing in their first-ever championship series, the Ontario Fury found itself in a hole early, and were unable to dig out of it, falling 7-3 to the San Diego Sockers in Game 1 of the Ron Newman Cup Finals.
San Diego’s offense got off to a quick start, scoring three times in the opening 7:02. Captain Kraig Chiles opened the scoring 2:44 into the game with a tight angle shot that slid past Ontario goalkeeper Claysson de Lima. Brandon Escoto doubled the lead, converting a pass from Tavoy Morgan for a 2-0 lead.
Ontario finally got on the board midway through the second quarter, as Thiago Goncalves blasted a shot past Boris Pardo, making it 3-1. But the Sockers took the momentum back late in the quarter as Guerrero Pino headed home a give-and-go with Morgan to make it 4-1 at the half.
San Diego kept the pressure on in the third. Leonardo de Oliveira blasted a shot from outside the yellow line to make it 5-1, then Christian Gutierrez made it 6-1, scoring shorthanded with 32 seconds remaining in the quarter.
Ontario worked to push forward in the fourth, but the San Diego defense stood tall. The Sockers, who only gave up 43 goals in 10 regular season games, ended up blocking 22 of Ontario’s 36 shots on goal in the game, with Gutierrez posting a game-high five. Meanwhile, Pardo made 10 saves before giving way to William Vanzela in the fourth due to injury.
Franck Tayou had two goals for the Fury, one on the power play in the third and another with the extra attacker on the field in the fourth.
The two teams will tangle again Sunday in Game 2 of the finals series. Kickoff is at 3 p.m. Should the Fury win, the two teams will play a 15-minute mini-game to determine the series winner.
