Landon Donovan To Play For USA
The United States National Arena Soccer Team will begin its summer season against Mexico on Friday May 31, 2019 at Citizens Business Bank Arena by reuniting two former members of the United States Men’s National Team.
Landon Donovan and Jermaine Jones, who both played in the Major Arena Soccer League during the 2018-19 season, will be suiting up for the USNAST as it takes on Mexico in the first friendly of the summer.
Donovan, considered the greatest soccer player in U.S. history, joined the San Diego Sockers this past season, scoring five goals and adding 11 assists in only eight games for the Pacific Division champions. Besides his production on the field, Donovan’s signing with the Sockers brought new attention and fans to arena soccer games around the league.
Jones joined the Ontario Fury for the team’s final five games. The 2014 World Cup veteran scored 10 goals and added four assists, almost leading Ontario to the final playoff spot. Jones’ presence lifted Ontario’s status in the community, drawing new fans to the arena.
“To get these two US Men's National Team legends to participate in this game is great for the growth of arena soccer,” said USNAST General Manager Bernie Lilavois. “And, to have them representing the United States again against their rivals from Mexico will be a special event for fans of both teams to see.”
The United States team will be coached by San Diego’s head coach Phil Salvagio. Mexico will be coached by Rene Ortiz. Rosters for both teams will be finalized in the coming days.
