Fury Shutout Outlaws
The Ontario Fury came into Friday night’s game needing a victory to keep pace in the hunt for a playoff spot in the Major Arena Soccer League’s Western Conference.
And the Fury did so emphatically, as they posted the team’s first shutout in team history, beating the Mesquite Outlaws 7-0 at Toyota Arena.
The Fury played a strong game on both ends of the field, limiting the visitors to only 16 shots. Chris Toth parried away 11, and he got help from his defense. Jesus Pacheco preserved the shutout in the fourth quarter, clearing the ball off the line after a Mesquite steal.
Ontario opened the scoring midway through the first quarter on a great individual effort. Justin Stinson took a pass from Franck Tayou near the boards, fought through a tackle as he made his way to the middle of the field, and blasted the ball past Eduardo Cortes for the 1-0 lead.
Charlie Gonzalez added to the lead in the final minute of the quarter. Set up for a free kick from the top of the arc, he got the Mesquite wall to move, and he threaded a shot through the hole for the 2-0 lead.
Gonzalez set up the next Ontario goal, again on a free kick. He gave a quick touch to Thiago Goncalves, who shot the ball through two defenders and past Cortes. He then hopped into the crowd and proposed to his girlfriend – who said yes.
Tayou sent Ontario into the half with a four-goal lead, as he took a pass from Stinson and fired it into the upper corner.
In the second half, the Fury worked the ball around the field, happy to keep their lead. Gonzalez put his second goal of the game, off an assist from Tayou, making it 5-0 after three.
Ontario got fourth quarter goals from Maicon de Abreu and Jesus Pacheco to complete the scoring.
The Fury ended the game outshooting the Outlaws 34-16. Cortes made 17 saves in the loss.
Ontario will next host the San Diego Sockers in a President’s Day matinee at Toyota Arena, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. Tickets are on sale now at the Toyota Arena box office, online at Ticketmaster.com or through the Fury’s website or through the Fury’s offices by calling 909-457-0252.
