FURY KNOCK SAN DIEGO FROM RANKS OF UNBEATEN
The Ontario Fury, Driven by Mark Christopher Chevrolet, got a pair of goals from Adrien Perez (Ontario High) and Juan Carlos Gonzalez (Cal State San Bernardino) as they defeated the San Diego Sockers 8-5 Thursday night at Citizens Business Bank Arena.
It was Ontario’s first-ever regular season victory at home over San Diego, and the Sockers’ first loss of the Major Arena Soccer League season.
San Diego opened the scoring just 2:11 into the game as Luan Oliveira slotted a shot past Fury goaltender Jose Miranda. But it was Perez who would provide the rest of the offense in the first, scoring off of feeds from Leonardo de Oliveira and Gonzalez to give the Fury a 2-1 lead after 15 minutes. It was the first time this season San Diego trailed at the end of any quarter.
The Fury’s defense, bolstered by the free agent re-signing of Alexander Caceres – who was released last week by El Paso, pressured the Sockers on both ends of the field. The pressure up front gave Ontario a short two-goal lead, as Jinho Lee stole the ball in deep and fed Israel Sesay for a 3-1 lead.
Tied at 4 after three quarters, the Fury offense came through in the final period. They took the lead 2:32 into the fourth on a counter attack. Gonzalez, who had two assists to go with his two goals, fed Thiago Goncalves up the middle who blasted a shot past San Diego goaltender Chris Toth for a 5-4 lead.
Two minutes later, with Kraig Chiles in the penalty box, Gonzalez added to the lead with a power play goal that just snuck over the line to make it a two-goal lead. Corey Maret added another goal to give the Fury a three-goal lead, and Maicon de Abreu shot one from his own defensive zone into the vacated net to offset a goal from Chiles with the extra attacker.
The two teams will meet up again at 5 p.m. Sunday evening at Valley View Casino Center in San Diego. The Sockers, however, will play Saturday night in Sonora, Mexico, before the matchup.
Ontario returns home next Friday night to take on the Soles de Sonora at 7 p.m. Tickets for the game are on sale now at the Citizens Business Bank Arena box office, online at Ticketmaster.com or through the Ontario Fury’s offices at 909-457-0252 or online at OntarioFury.com.
